For a few months now I've been taking a beginner course in ISL (Irish Sign Language) and I just took my first exam yesterday, which i passed with flying colours. I was so nervous, having been sick and in hospital but my teacher, being such a proffessional, calmed me down and we got through it together.
Its been a long time since i've been so passionate about learning a new skill... I think the last time i got this excited learning something new was when i was in college and learned to play bass.
My teacher thinks i have the potential to go on and make a career out of it which until recently i thought may have been just a pipe dream. But now, i can genuinely see myself using sign language in a career setting. I think its such a useful skill to have and I don't understand why its not offfered to children in schools.
It's always cool to learn a new language and I've been trying to learn German for so long now, i doubt i'll ever get it. But with sign language, you really can't just read a book and teach yourself. Its a very hands on ( ignore the terrible pun) skill to learn. But its so worthwhile learning it.
Im continuing on to the next stages of the course now to gain extra certificates and grades and hopefully will learn enough to carry on even after the course ends..
Props to Kevin McCauley, our teacher. He's awesome.
